Sustainable Industries Journal Features Momentum Renewable Energy and John Deere Wind Energy Alliance

SIJ recently featured Momentum Renewable Energy and its alliance with John Deere WInd Energy to develop community wind projects in the Pacific Northwest. Momentum will soon break ground on its 10 and 5 MW wind projects at the site of Threemile Canyon Farms in Boardman, Oregon. Read the article.

Clean Edge report cites doubling of investment in clean energy technologies

Venture capital investment in U.S. companies developing alternative energy technologies more than doubled last year to an all-time high of $2.4 billion as high oil prices caused investors to seize on the promise of ethanol and other biofuels according to a recent report issued by Clean Edge, Inc. The report also notes that investments in biofuels surged from $20.5 million in 2005 to $81.3 million last year. Click here to read the full article.

Grass beats corn in ethanol study

According to a recent University of Minnesota study, a field planted with a variety of prairie grasses and flowering plants has more than triple the energy of single-variety grasses.  The study estimated that mixed prairie grasses grown on marginal farmland would yield 51% more energy per acre than corn cultivated on fertile land.  In addition to producing more net energy per acre than corn, the grasses also act as a sponge for greenhouse emissions.

Ernst & Young ranks US first for wind power investment

The United States is ranked as the most attractive country for investment in wind power over the long term according to a report by the Ernst & Young Renewable Energy Group.  According to the report, the US is showing an unprecedented support for climate-friendly policies.  Canada, which recently surpassed one gigawatt of installed wind power capacity, is ranked seventh for investment potential.

National Geographic reports on wind energy market growth

The magazine reports that the wind industry is on track to add 3,000 megawatts of wind power generation to the U.S. in 2006.  The article also discusses development occurring in Minnesota, including a planned 30 MW community wind farm on Buffalo Ridge, and Xcel’s plans to perform a $160 million update to the region’s transmission lines to export an additional 500 megawatts of wind energy from Buffalo Ridge to urban centers.  Read the article.

Momentum featured in Oregonian community wind article

Momentum Renewable Energy was prominently featured in a recent Oregonian article about community wind. The article highlighted Momentum’s selection as a finalist for Energy Trust funding for its 15 MW Threemile Canyon wind project under development.  The story also discussed the market opportunity and benefits of community wind as complementary to large scale development.

Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers cites green technologies as enormous wealth creation opportunity

According to a recent BusinessWeek article, Bill Joy, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems and a partner at VC firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers believes tremendous wealth creation opportunities exist in green technologies in the U.S. and developing world.  According to Joy, the firm has been looking at investments related to new fuels, including ethanol, fuel cells, advanced battery technology, and new ways of using biotech to make fuels.  Read the article.
